How Capital Gains Tax is charged

Capital Gains Tax is charged on the profit made when an asset is disposed of for more than it cost. The gain is added to income for the year and taxed at the rate that applies to the taxpayer's position in the Income Tax bands, after the annual exempt amount has been deducted.

The annual exempt amount is a fixed allowance of gains that are not taxed at all. Gains above it are charged at the individual rates, which differ from the Income Tax rates and changed on 30 October 2024.

Rates, allowances and reliefs

The annual exempt amount, the individual rates and the reliefs that reduce a gain are published for each tax year separately. The Tax Rulebook keeps the 2024–25, 2025–26 and 2026–27 editions side by side, so the 30 October 2024 rate change can be read against the year it fell in.
